Dr. Ian Dawe, MHSc, MD, FRCP(C) is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and as of April 1, 2016, the Program Chief and Medical Director for Mental Health at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, ON. He most recently was both the Mental Health and Addictions Physician Lead for the Central East LHIN and the Physician-in-Chief at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences.
As a Recovery leader, he ensures that recovery is fostered as providers apply their knowledge, skills, and expertise in ways that assist people to become actively involved in their own care, at their own pace, and by working with them to increasingly take personal responsibility for their recovery journey.
As a Recovery champion, he has focused on:
1) Reducing coercive practices within the mental health care facilities that he influences; and
2) Creating a person-centered health system that supports people to make informed decisions about, and to successfully manage, their own health and care, and to make informed decisions and choose when to invite others to act on their behalf. This requires healthcare services to work in partnership to deliver care responsive to people’s individual abilities, preferences, lifestyles and goals, focused on shared decision-making and self-management.
